How do I commission a piece of art?
If you’re considering commissioning a painting, the first step is to get in touch. There’s no commitment and you can ask as many questions as you need. We can chat via phone, Zoom or even meet face to face – whatever’s most convenient for you.
Please have a look through my work to get a feel for my style. It always helps if you can reference a painting that you particularly like (or any elements of one that you’ don’t like) to help me envisage your final painting.
How much will it cost?
A portrait commission is usually £275 + P&P. Architectural paintings also start from £275 however the price is more dependent on size and complexity so please get in touch to discuss.
How quickly can you complete my commission?
This will depend on the request and my current workload however I would usually need at least a fortnight from receiving the image to delivery of artwork. Please make sure you let me know any timescales that you’d like to work with when you get in touch.
How do I pay for my artwork?
To secure your space in my studio, I ask for a 25% deposit that’s non-refundable. The final balance is payable once the painting is finished and you’re happy with it. You can pay via BACS, Paypal or in person if you’re able to collect the painting from Warwickshire.
Refunds aren’t available on commissions, but please rest assured that you won’t pay the final 75% until you’re happy with the painting.
Will I see updates of my commission as you work on it?
We will discuss colours, style and any particulars at the start of the process. Unless I have a specific question, I do not usually send photographic updates while I work. This is because your painting will go through various stages before completion and it wouldn’t be beneficial to share them.
However, if you’re interested in seeing the process your painting goes through, I can take photos as it develops and share them with you at the end.
What do you need from me?
I work from photographs so I will need a photo of the subject for the painting. It’s most useful if this is very high resolution, though I can also work from old photographs if required. You can send this photo via email or post (please note that apps like WhatsApp compress images).
When working on a portrait, I also like to know a bit about the personality of the subject, so I can see it coming through in the painting. This can be in the form of words, stories or further images that embody their personality.
Can I order prints of the painting?
Yes, please let me know if you’re interested in a print before the painting is released.
Can I have my artwork framed?
I don’t offer this service personally, though I can recommend styles that might suit your painting.
Will my commission image be used elsewhere?
The copyright of the image remains with me. I use pictures of commissions in marketing materials which include social media and website updates. If you would prefer that your image is not used for this purpose, please let me know at the start of the process.
